SMITH Harold George

Harold was born in Albany c1896, son of Mr. John Henry Smith whose address in 1916 was Porongorups via Mt Barker.
Harold was working as a farmer, aged 20 when he enlisted at Blackboy Hill on 29 December 1914. He embarked aboard the HMAT A50 Itonus on 19 February 1915 and sailed for Egypt and Gallipoli.
He was wounded on 7 August 1915. Following the War he married Verdun Garnett's daughter, Ida E. E. Garnett  in 1926 and they had several sons including Tom and Ray, and a daughter nicknamed 'Black Jack'.
Tom was killed in a tragic accident, holding a water tank steady on the back of a cart. Harold and his family lived near Amelup and the Stirling Ranges in a house that was lined with hessian and had a dirt floor and kept dingo dogs. Harold was a member of the VDC in Gnowangerup during WWII. He received the 1914-15 Star along with the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

Harold died at South Borden in 1974 aged 78 years and is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery.
